In 1820 the Alaner family returned to Richmond, Edgar entered college, and in 1826 to the University of Virginia, where he studied for a year. On May 26, 1827, Edgar Allan Poe, in dire need of money, signed an army contract for five years and became a private of the First Artillery Regiment of the US Army. In 1921, at the initiative of the Edgar Allan Poe Memorial Society, a sculpture by Moses Ezekiel Russian was erected in Baltimore.
