On December 24, 2019, Drake releases the video “War”, which was the first single in anticipation of the release of the new album “D6”. In the track, the rapper touches on themes of friendship and betrayal, recalling the former and current artists of his OVO label. In particular, he discusses his conflict with The Weekend, still calling him “family” despite long-standing disagreements between the artists.

Drake said that he was most influenced by Kanye West, J-Z, Tee Ai and his mentor Lil Wayne. Kanye West Drake refers to as one of his idols and favorite rappers in hip-hop. He revealed this topic in detail in an interview with MTV: “I can’t sit still and say that he is not one of my idols, that he is not one of my favorite rappers. Regardless of the mood, I have ever felt, it does not matter. If you ask me what I think about Kanye West, I’ll always find something positive to say.” Drake’s musical abilities are often compared to the West.

He commented on this: “It is a great honor when I was a child trying to figure out what I like, he was the one I attributed to the most. He was an artist in full: from the design of his albums to his music. Now, I would say, he is truly an outstanding competitor … and a friend at the same time. My goal is to surpass all his achievements. I don’t want to be as good as Kanye, I want to be better.”

Music style

Drake’s texts often raise themes of wealth, fame, and past relationships. All music describes Drake’s moods: search, thoughtfulness, introspection, reflection, self-confidence, drama, seriousness, energy, humor, intensity, ease/gentleness, literacy, melancholy, nostalgia, playfulness, smoothness, sensuality, cordiality. Most hip-hop listeners indicate Drake is “soft” for his sincere and merciful lyrics and soulful melodies. He rejected this, saying: “I am not soft. I’m just not one of those people who are emotionally closed.” Most of Drake’s work includes elements of both rap and singing, which made him unique as an artist.

Drake even called himself “the first person to successfully perform rap and sing.” He went further than his statement, saying: “I am one of the few artists who remain themselves every day. I don’t have to spend six hours to get together, and I don’t get up in the morning, I don’t memorize how to behave or how to speak. I just remain myself. This is one of the favorite parts of my life – I made it clean, remaining myself.”

Drake has a unique musical style that sets him apart from his colleagues at Young Money. Touching on the Drake album Take Care, Lil Wayne commented on the project before its release: “I can say, you know, I don’t remember anyone else who could hurt so much for life, even I can’t. This guy is from another planet.” Recently, Drake made a noticeable departure from working with Young Money / Cash Money towards the new OVOXO project.

OVO-owl symbolizes OVOXO – a separate organization from Young Money / Cash Money, representing an alliance between Drake and R & B-singer The Weekend. The owl’s eyes and beak form the abbreviation for October’s Very Own. Drake moved in this direction after the release of Taking Care, which contains 5 songs written together with the Weekend, ranging from Crew Love to Shot for Me, as well as two work on the production in Crew Love and The Ride.

Drake is one of the creators of the OVO Sound label. Also, he has his clothing line, a channel on Beats 1, and is also the worldwide representative of the NBA Toronto Raptors team.
