The maternal grandfather on the maternal side was a professional footballer and played for the reserve staff of the Scottish Hibernian and the main staff of Sterling Albion. No wonder Andy is a fan of Hibernian. Besides, under the influence of the captain of the British national team in the Davis Cup John Loyd, Andy began to support the English club Wolverhampton Wanderers, in the shirt of which he was repeatedly seen.
Andy calls Andre Agassi his tennis idol. Murray often emphasizes that he is primarily a Scotsman, and only then a Briton.
Dunblane tragedy
As a child, Andy attended elementary school in Dunblane and in March 1996, at the age of 8, survived the Dunblane Massacre there, during which Thomas Hamilton, the former head of the scouts of the school, killed 16 children and one teacher, and then shot himself. Murray at that time was in his class and was not injured. Andy says that he was too small at that time and did not understand what was happening. In his autobiography, hitting back, Andy wrote that he was visiting a scout group led by Hamilton before his dismissal from school.
Playstyle
According to famed coach Paul Annakon, Murray is arguably the best counterattack player in the world. In February 2008, at a competition in Dubai, Murray defeated Federer, the first racket of the world at that time, but instead of praising his opponent, he received criticism. Federer at a post-match press conference condemned the opponent for being too defensive in style. However, the level of Murray’s game has since grown markedly. The Briton gained muscle mass and strengthened the pitch.
Murray is a great tactician who knows how to analyze the game of his opponents and find their weaknesses. He builds his tactics by the opponent’s game, court coverage and weather conditions. His game is often compared with the style of the Slovak Miloslav Mechirz, who, being in good shape, often played non-standard and witty combinations with his rivals, like a cat with a mouse. Murray moves so correctly and positionally on the court that it often seems that the opponents do not intentionally hit, but hang the ball “on the nose” of the opponent.
Murray is also very good at receiving the pitch, thanks to the excellent reaction and long arms, even tall and strong players like Ivo Karlovic and Milos Raonic are rarely “piercing” the Briton with an ace. At the beginning of his career, Murray liked to depart at the reception very deep behind the backline, by his defensive playing style. After the acts at the reception more aggressively, but still, according to many, not aggressive enough. Reception on his left is much more dangerous than on the right. Murray is very patient and hardy and can keep the ball in the game for a long time, and Tim Henman called his candle the best in the world along with Leyton Hewit. Prefers fast coatings.

At the debut Australian Open, Murray is inferior to Juan Ignacio Chela in the first round. In February, after he dropped out in the first round in a tournament in Zagreb, he took part in a tournament in San Jose. Murray managed to win this tournament by beating Leyton Hewitt in the final 2-6, 6-1, 7-6. Before this match in the semifinals, he first beat a tennis player from the top ten, No. 3 at that time Andy Roddick 7-5, 7-5. Winning a tournament in San Jose was the first for Murray in his career at ATP tournaments. He conquered it at the age of 18 years. At his next tournament in Memphis, he reached the quarter-finals.
In the next part of the season, Murray is not very successful. Until June, he was unable at tournaments to go beyond the second round. Andy managed to interrupt the series of failures at the tournament in Nottingham, where he reached the quarter-finals. At the Wimbledon tournament, he managed to get to the fourth round. In the third round match, he beat Andy Roddick, but in the next match lost to Marcos Baghdatis.
At the tournament in Newport, he reached the semifinals. In early August, Murray reached the final at a tournament in Washington, where he lost to Arno Clement 6-7, 2-6. At the Master’s tournaments in Toronto, he reached the semi-finals, and in Cincinnati to the quarter-finals. In a second-round match at a tournament in Cincinnati, Murray outplayed the first racket of the world, Roger Federer 7-5, 6-4, for the first time in his career.
At the US Open, like at Wimbledon, he stops one step from the quarterfinal, losing to Nikolai Davydenko 1-6, 7-5, 3-6, 0-6 in the fourth round match. Murray finished the 2006 season at the rank of 17th in the world.
2007-2009 (First Grand Final)
At the tournament in Doha, Murray reaches the final, having outplayed Nikolai Davydenko, the third in the world, in the semifinals. In the decisive match, he lost to Ivan Lubichich. At the Australian Championship this year, he managed to break into the fourth round, losing only to Rafael Nadal in five sets 7-6, 4-6, 6-4, 3-6, 1-6. In February, he won the second title at ATP tournaments. Once again, he manages to do this in San Jose, where he won a year ago. This time Ivo Karlovich 6-7, 6-4, 7-6 was replayed in the final. Then, at three tournaments in a row, Murray reached the semifinals (in Memphis and at two Masters tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami). Thanks to these performances, he first entered the top ten in the ATP ranking.
Andy is forced to miss most of the season due to injury including the French Open and the Wimbledon tournament. The comeback took place at a tournament in Montreal, where he lost in the second round. At the US Open, he is inferior in the third round match to Lee Hyun Taek. In October, Andy reached the finals at a tournament in Metz, where he lost to Tommy Robredo 6-0, 2-6, 3-6. At Masters in Paris, Murray reached the quarter-finals. He ends the season in 11th place in the ranking.
2008
Murray began the next season with a victory at the tournament in Doha, where in the decisive match he outplayed Stanislas Wawrinka 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. At the Australian Open, by the will of the lot, he was already in the first round to meet with the strong French tennis player Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. As a result, Andy lost 5-7, 4-6, 6-0, 6-7. In February, he wins the title at a tournament in Marseille, which is fifth for Murray in his career. At the Dubai tournament in the first round match, he replayed the world’s first Roger Federer 6-7, 6-3, 6-4, but in the quarterfinals, he lost to the fifth in the world Nikolai Davydenko 5-7, 4-6.
At the French Open this year, he reached the third round. Then, at the grass tournament in London, he managed to reach the quarter-finals. He reaches the same stage at the Wimbledon tournament, for the first time reaching the quarter-finals of the Grand Slam tournaments. The path to the semifinals for him was closed by Rafael Nadal, who easily defeated Murray in three sets 3-6, 2-6, 4-6. Thanks to this performance, Andy returns to the top ten in the ranking. The British continued his performances of the season at the Master’s tournament in Toronto, where he managed to beat Thomas Johansson and two top ten tennis players Stanislas Wawrinka and Novak Djokovic, so he reached the semifinals. Rafael Nadal again blocked his path further. This time, Murray lost to the Spaniard with a score of 6-7, 3-6.
At the next tournament in Cincinnati, having beaten Sam Querrey, Dmitry Tursunov, Carlos Moyu and Ivo Karlovich, Andy first made it to the final of the Masters series tournament. In the decisive battle for the title, he played against Novak Djokovic. Having won against him 7-6, 7-6 Murray won his first career title in tournaments of this series. After this success, Andy first took part in the Summer Olympics. At the Olympic tennis tournament in Beijing in singles, he unexpectedly lost in the first round, losing to the athlete representing Taiwan 6-7, 4-6 Lu. A little later in the second round match, along with his brother Jamie, he conceded in the doubles tournament.
Immediately after the Olympics, Murray takes part in the US Open. During the tournament, Murray alternately cracked down on his rivals Sergio Roitman, Mikael Llodra, Jürgen Meltzer, Stanislas Wawrinka, and Juan Martin del Potro. As a result, Murray reached the semi-finals of the tournament for the first time in his career from the Grand Slam series, where he was awaited by the first at that time in the world Rafael Nadal against whom Murray had never won before. In a four-set match with a score of 6-2, 7-6, 4-6, 6-4, Murray beat Nadal for the first time and reached the final of the Grand Slam tournament for the first time. He becomes the first Briton to have succeeded since Greg Rosedsky, who also managed to do this at the US Open in 1997. In the decisive title match, Murray is easily inferior to the winner of four previous tournaments Roger Federer 2-6, 5-7, 2-6.
Murray managed to get revenge for the defeat in the U.S. Championship final in October at Masters in Madrid, where he defeated Federer in the semifinals 3-6, 6-3, 7-5. Beating then in the final of Gilles Simon, Murray takes his title in this tournament. After this success, he manages to defend last year’s title at a tournament in St. Petersburg. At the last of the year Masters tournament in Paris, he reached the quarter-finals. At the end of the season, he took part in the Final tournament for the first time, where he made it to the semi-finals. Murray finished the season, confidently taking the 4th place in the ranking of tennis players, having won five tournaments per season.
2009
The 2009 season, the Scottish tennis player again begins with a victory in the tournament in Doha. In the semifinals, he managed to beat Roger Federer, and in the final, Andy Roddick. At the Australian Open, Andy was unable to overcome the barrier of the fourth round, losing to Fernando Verdasco 6-2, 1-6, 6-1, 3-6, 4-6. At the next tournament in Australia after Rotterdam, Murray was able to win his tenth career title. In the final, he replayed No. 1 in the world of Rafael Nadal 6-3, 4-6, 6-0.
At the tournament in Dubai, Murray reached the quarter-finals. Quite successfully, he performed at the March Masters tournaments. First, in Indian Wells, he reached the finals, beating 1/2 the second racket of the world Roger Federer 6-3, 4-6, 6-1. In the final, he was already awaited by the first in the world Nadal, to whom the Briton lost 1-6, 2-6. At the next Masters in Miami, he again reached the finals, where he met Novak Djokovic. Beating Serbian tennis player 6-2, 7-5 Andy Murray wins the title of winner.
The ground part of the season begins with the semi-finals at the Master’s tournament in Monte Carlo. In the tournament, he lost only to Nadal. At the Masters in Rome, in the first match, he lost to the Argentinean Juan Monaco. Despite this, Murray managed to rise in the ranking to third place, which was the highest achievement for British tennis players. At the Masters in Madrid, he reached the quarter-finals, where he again lost to the Argentine tennis player this time, Juan Martin del Potro. At the French Open, Andy first reached the quarterfinals, where he lost to Chilean Fernando Gonzalez 3-6, 6-3, 0-6, 4-6.
The Scot begins preparations for Wimbledon with a tournament in London, where he wins the title. Tim Henman played in the finals of this tournament three times (1999, 2001 and 2002), but each time lost, while Murray won his first final. Also, this victory was the 12th for Murray in the ATP single-player tournaments and he beat Henman with his 11 titles. At the Wimbledon tournament, Murray became Britain’s main hope of winning a title that British tennis players had not won since 1936. But he did not meet the expectations of many fans, although he achieved the best performance for himself in this tournament – reaching the semifinals. The path to the finals was blocked by the American Andy Roddick, who outplayed Murray 4-6, 6-4, 6-7, 6-7.
After taking a summer break after Wimbledon, Andy again took part in official tournaments in August at Masters in Montreal. He manages to win this tournament. In the final, he defeats Juan Martin del Potro with a score of 6-7, 7-6, 6-1.
This success helps him on August 17 for the first time in his career to rise to second place in the world ranking (the highest in history for the British), having removed Spaniard Rafael Nadal from his, who was one of the two best tennis players in the world continuously for more than 4 years. Andy stayed on the second line for 2 weeks, after which Nadal again ahead of the Scot in the ranking. At the next Masters in Cincinnati, where he won last season, Murray reached the semifinals, where he lost to the first in the world at that time Roger Federer 2-6, 6-7.
At the last Grand Slam tournament of the year in the US Open, where Murray last year managed to reach the final, he stumbles on this in the fourth round match, losing to Marina Chili. After the tournament, he again fell to third place in the ranking, and then, without speaking at tournaments for a total of six weeks, and to fourth.
The next tournament was played in November in Valencia, where he managed to win. In the final, Murray defeated Mikhail Youzhny 6-3, 6-2. At Masters, Paris is inferior in the match of the third round, and at the Final of the year, the tournament does not leave the group, despite two victories and one defeat. Murray finished the year in 4th place, winning six record titles for himself in one season.
2010-2012 (victory at the Olympics and the first Grand Slam title)
Murray began the 2010 season by participating with Laura Robson in the traditional Hopman Cup exhibition tournament, where they reached the finals as part of the UK team. The first official tournament for him is the Australian Open, where before that his best performance was entering the fourth round. Beating Kevin Anderson, Mark Nickel, Florent Serre, and John Isner, Murray first goes to the quarterfinals of the Australian championship. In the match 1/4, his opponent was Rafael Nadal, the second in the world, whom he defeated due to the Spaniard’s refusal to continue the meeting with a score of 6-3, 7-6, 3-0 in favor of Murray. In the semifinals, he was opposed by the Croat Maren Cilic, whom Murray defeated 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 and for the second time in his career made it to the final at the Grand Slam tournament. As in his first final at the US Open 2008, his opponent was Roger Federer, in whom Murray, in this case, could not take a single set, losing 3-6, 4-6, 6-7.
He continued his performances in the season of Andy at the tournament in Dubai, where he lost in the second round. At the Master’s tournament in Indian Wells, he reached the quarter-finals, and at the Masters in Miami, he lost in the first meeting to Mardi Fish. The unpaved part of the season for Murray has traditionally gone worse than the rest.
Of the speeches, only the quarter-finals at the Master’s tournament in Madrid can be noted. At the main dirt tournament of the French Open, he dropped out of the fight at the stage of the fourth round, losing to Tomas Berdych 4-6, 5-7, 3-6. At a tournament in London, where Andy managed to win last year, this time he loses in the third round to Mardi Fish. At the Wimbledon tournament, he managed to repeat his last year’s achievement and reach the semi-finals of the tournament. In the struggle for reaching the final, he is second to number 1 in the world for Spaniard Rafael Nadal 4-6, 6-7, 4-6.
In preparation for the last Grand Slam tournament of the year, Andy played in three tournaments. At first, at a tournament in Los Angeles, he reached the finals, where he lost to American Sam Querrey. Then in Toronto, he managed to defend his last year’s champion title at the Canada Masters tournament, beating Rafael Nadal in the semifinals 6-3, 6-4, and then Roger Federer 7-5, 7-5 in the final. Finally, at the Masters Tournament in Cincinnati, he reached the quarter-finals. At the US Open, Andy unexpectedly stumbled in the third round match, losing to Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka 7-6, 6-7, 3-6, 3-6.
The Scot began the last part of the season with a speech at a tournament in Beijing, where he reached the 1/4 stage. At the Masters Series tournament in Shanghai, Murray won his second title of the season, beating Roger Federer 6-3, 6-2 at the decisive moment. At the tournament in Valencia, he failed to defend last year’s title of winner. But in the doubles competition at this tournament, together with his older brother Jamie, he won his first career doubles title at ATP tournaments.
At the Masters in Paris, he reached the quarter-finals. In the third Final Tournament for himself in his career, he managed to leave the group in the semi-finals from second place, wherein the end he lost to Rafael Nadal 6-7, 6-3, 6-7. Like the previous two seasons, the Briton, following the results of his performances, took fourth place in the world ranking.
2011
Like last year, Murray begins the season with performances at the Hopman Cup team tournament. Unlike last year’s performance (final), the UK team, which he represented together with Laura Robson, took the last 4th place in his group. The first official tournament in the ATP World Tour for him again was the Australian Open, where he reached the final last year. Murray manages for the second time in a row and the third time in his career to reach the final of the Grand Slam tournament.
But again, he lost in three sets, this time to Novak Djokovic (before that, the British beat Djokovic three times in a row, including in the two finals of the Masters series tournaments). The first two defeats in the finals of the Grand Slam tournaments (US Open-2008 and Australian Open-2010) were made by Murray by Roger Federer.
Immediately after playing in Australia, Murray has a streak of bad luck. He lost the opening bouts at three tournaments in a row in Rotterdam, Indian Wells, and Miami. I discovered the ground part of the season with a performance in Monte Carlo, where I managed to reach the semifinals. In Madrid, Murray loses in the third round. At the tournament in Rome, as in Monte Carlo, he was able to reach the semifinals. At the French Open this season, Andy Murray for the first time managed to reach the 1/2 finals.
At the grass tournament in London, where he won in 2009, Andy manages to win a second time. In the final, he was beaten by French tennis player Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 3-6, 7-6, 6-4. At the Wimbledon tournament for the third time in a row, he stops one step away from the final. Like a year ago, in the semifinals, he was beaten by Rafael Nadal 7-5, 2-6, 2-6, 4-6.
The first match at ATP tournaments after Wimbledon was played in August at Masters in Toronto, against Kevin Anderson, who lost 3-6, 1-6. Then he wins the Masters in Cincinnati, having outplayed the new first racket of the world, Novak Djokovic, in the final. With the score 6-4, 3-0 in favor of Murray, the Serb refused to continue the meeting. At the US Open, he managed to reach the semifinals. As in the previous two Grand Slam tournaments, Rafael Nadal blocked his path further. Murray is inferior with a score of 4-6, 2-6, 6-3, 2-6.
The next tournament after the United States for the Scots was the tournament in Bangkok, where Murray managed to win the title. Then he wins another title at a tournament in Tokyo, winning 3-6, 6-2, 6-0 in the final. In this tournament, he took a double, having won in the doubles with his brother Jamie.
He takes the third consecutive tournament at the Master’s tournament in Shanghai, where he defended his last year’s title. In the final, Murray outplayed David Ferrer – 7-5, 6-4. The first who managed to beat Murray after this series was Tomas Berdych, who won against Andy in the quarterfinals of the Masters in Paris. At the Final Tournament, having played the first meeting against Ferrera, Murray withdrew from the tournament due to injury. As a result of his speeches, Murray was in the usual 4th place in the ranking.
2012
In the new season, Murray came with a new coach. His mentor was the famous tennis player Ivan Lendl in the past. The first tournament for him was the tournament in Brisbane. Murray won it. In the final, he beat Alexander Dolgopolov 6-1, 6-3. At the Australian Open, where he previously reached the finals twice in a row this time, he stopped a step away from repeating this result. In the semifinal confrontation, he lost to the current champion Novak Djokovic in five sets 3-6, 6-3, 7-6, 1-6, 5-7.
Their match lasted 4 hours 50 minutes. At the Wimbledon tournament, Murray reached the final, having beaten such tennis players as Davydenko, Karlovich, Baghdatis, Chilich, Ferrer, and Tsonga along the way. But having reached his fourth final of the Grand Slam tournament, he again lost – Roger Federer, who won in four games with a score of 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4, became a stumbling block.
At the London Olympics on the same Wimbledon courts, Murray won the gold medal by beating the first and second racket of the world – Federer in the final and Djokovic in the semifinal respectively. Final match score: 6-2, 6-1, 6-4. Thus, Andy took revenge from Roger for his defeat in the final of the Wimbledon tournament. He also reached the mixed doubles final together with Laura Robson, but lost to a pair of Victoria Azarenka and Maxim Mirny, remaining with silver.
On September 10, he won a historic victory for himself and all of the British tennis at the US Open. For UK athletes, this success was the first in the last 76 years in the men’s singles. After that, Murray took third place in the world ranking. In October, he reached the semi-finals of the tournament in Tokyo, and at the Masters in Shanghai he was able to reach the finals, beating 1/2 Roger Federer. In the decisive match, he lost to Novak Djokovic. At the Final tournament, Murray was able to leave the group from second place, but in the semifinals, he lost to Federer.
2013-2015 victory at Wimbledon and Davis Cup
Murray began the 2013 season with a victory at the tournament in Brisbane, where he outplayed Grigor Dimitrov in the final (7-6, 6-4). At the Australian Open in the semifinals, Andy won Federer for the first time in his career as part of the Grand Slam tournaments (6-4, 6-7, 6-3, 6-7, 6-2). For the third time, he played in the finals of the first Grand Slam of the season and again without success.
Murray lost to Novak Djokovic with a score of 7-6, 6-7, 3-6, 2-6. Having paused in February, the Briton returned to the court at the March Masters in the United States. In Indian Wells, he reached the quarter-finals, and in Miami, he managed to win the title. In the final, Murray defeated David Ferrer (2-6, 6-4, 7-6) and after that success rose to second place in the single-player ranking.
In the dirt part of the season, the best result for Murray was the quarterfinals in Madrid, and he had to miss the French Open because of an injury. On the grass, Andy came out in full force. He won the tournament in London, beating Marina Cilicia in the final – 5-7, 7-5, 6-3. Then Andy Murray won the Wimbledon tennis tournament. He became the first Briton to win singles since 1936.
In the final, in more than a three-hour match, he defeated the main favorite and the first racket of the world, Novak Djokovic, with a score of 6-4, 7-5, 6-4. At the US Open this season, Murray defended last year’s title. This time he managed to get to the quarter-finals, where Andy lost to Stan Wawrinka. After playing for the UK national team in the first round of the Davis Cup in September, Murray ended the season ahead of schedule to resolve back problems.
2014
At the Wimbledon tournament, Murray was unable to defend his last year’s title. In the quarterfinals, he was beaten by Grigor Dimitrov, interrupting a series of 17 consecutive victories (including the 2012 Olympics) on Wimbledon courts. After the tournament, Andy rolled back to 10th place in the ranking – the worst position since 2008. In August, at the Masters in Toronto and Cincinnati, Murray managed to reach the quarter-finals. The same result was waiting for him at the US Open, where Novak Djokovic closed his way to the semifinals.
The most successful segment of the season for Murray was autumn performances. On September 28, he won the tournament in Shenzhen, defeating Tommy Robredo in the final – 5–7, 7–6, 6–1. The title was the first for Andy from Wimbledon in 2013. A week after this success, he reached the semifinal of the tournament in Beijing. The second title of the season, Murray took at the hall tournament in Vienna, beating October 19 in the final of David Ferrer – 5–7, 6–2, 7–5.
A week later, on October 26, at a tournament in Valencia in one of the longest finals of the season (the match lasted 3 hours 20 minutes), he again defeated Robredo: 3-6, 7-6, 7-6. Autumn successes allowed Murray to be selected in the eight strongest, who fell to the Final tournament in London. On it, the British spoke unsuccessfully. Having won only one match in his group of three, he left the tournament. For the first time since 2007, Murray finished in the ranking for the season below 4th place, taking 6th place.
2016-2018 wins at Wimbledon and the Olympics
2017
Murray reached the final in the first official tournament of the season. It happened in Doha, where the leaders of the world’s No. 1 ranking Murray and Djokovic met in a decisive match. Andy lost this match in three sets (3-6, 7-5, 4-6). He did not perform very well in the Australian Open, losing to Misha Zverev in the fourth round. In early March, Andy won a tournament in Dubai, which made him the only player in that season and 45th in his career. In the final, he was strong against Spain’s Fernando Verdasco 6-3, 6-2.
In April, Murray was able to reach the semifinals in Barcelona. He achieved the same result in the courts of Roland Garros. In the fight to reach the final, he lost to Stan Wawrinka in a bitter fight. Their match lasted 4 hours 34 minutes and ended 7-6, 3-6, 7-5, 6-7, 1-6 in favor of Murray. In the Wimbledon Tournament, he defended his title last year and reached the quarter-finals, losing to Sam Querin in the US at this stage.
Wimbledon was Murray’s last tournament of the season. He had to be released for more than a year due to a throat injury. He missed the World No. 1 title because of a missed half of the season and finished 16th.
2018
Murray’s recovery took a long time. He returned to court in June after playing in London and Wimbledon preparations in Eastbourne but failed in the second round. He had to miss Wimbledon, and then went down to 839th. Murray made it to the quarter-finals for the first time in a long tournament in Washington in August but failed to make it to court. The US Open ended in the second-round defeat by Fernando Verdasco to the British. After that, he played in only one tournament in Shenzhen in September, where he reached the quarter-finals.
2019
